Jason Lenox - Diving back into the 80s with Lords of the Cosmos
Guns! Magic! Machines! Mayhem! Mystical technology and cybernetic chaos erupt in a fantasy apocalypse wasteland
Today we had the chance to sit down with Jason Lenox, best known for The Satanic Coloring Book Vol 1 & 2, and the Lords of the Cosmos series. He is live on Kickstarter with a campaign for Lords of the Cosmos #1-5, until October 13th! Let’s take a step back in time and dive into some 80s nostalgia-driven stories!!
Keeping it Geekly: Thank you for stopping by to talk about your current Kickstarter for Lords of the Cosmos #5 and your history as an indie comic creator!! Feel free to tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into comics!
Jason Lenox: I’ve enjoyed making comics as an independent creator for the last 12 years and I would base it on a lifetime of enjoying drawing and reading comics since I was a little kid
KIG: Lords of the Cosmos #5 is an 80’s inspired fantasy apocalypse wasteland that reimagines Saturday morning cartoons with way more guns, mayhem & chaos. Can you tell us about what went into creating this series?
JL: Well, the origin of creating the series was a lifetime of watching cartoons and playing with toys as kids and never losing an interest in those items and when I got to meet Dennis Fallon and Jason Palmatier (my co-creators on LOTC) back in 2016 we started with a character bible and an ending and we’ve been working our way from the start to the end ever since.
KIG: Issue 5 is currently funded on Kickstarter with 25 days left to go, congratulations on that by the way!! What have readers missed within the series so far without spoiling too much?
JL: The readers have missed a lot of great action, stories, and characterization in worldbuilding in the prior issues, but luckily for them, they can catch up with all of it very easily on the catch-up tiers in the current Kickstarter campaign for issue five.
KIG: Who is all involved with the creation of Lord of the Cosmos? What does the collaborative process look like between everyone?
JL: There’s an entire team of people that work on Lords of the Cosmos. Dennis Jason and I are the creators and owners, so we work with other people in the process on a freelance basis. We try to give them some basic direction but we encourage their own creative view on what their stories look like as long as it stays within the basic character, models, and series bible.
KIG: I really like the idea of having 3 separate stories that interconnect to form this world. Was it ever challenging to balance the continuity of Lord of the Cosmos?
JL: I think the first issue was the hardest one to try to balance having multiple stories in the same issue that try to go to a greater purpose, but as we’ve gone five issues deep in the series, I think we’ve definitely gotten better at balancing multi-story continuity.
KIG: After a successful launch on Kickstarter and funding within your first week do you have any advice for any creators interested in starting their first campaign?
JL: My advice for any creators trying to get involved with crowdfunding in 2024 get ready to work really hard because it’s definitely not getting any easier out here with the economy being pushed by inflation. Consumers discretionary income has started to dry up for creative projects so it’s harder now than I think it’s ever been in the 12 years that I’ve done projects on Kickstarter and Indiegogo.
KIG: Do you have any other projects you are currently working on or anything planned for the future?
JL: Once Lords of the Cosmos issue five wraps up on Kickstarter and Indiegogo the number one goal is gonna be to wrap up all the rewards for the backers and then I’m going to start looking at what we need to do to get issues six ready to move ahead and I think that’s about it for now
KIG: Do you have any social media platforms to shout out to our readers? Where can we find you most active?
JL: Twitter and Instagram @lenoxartist
KIG: Thank you for taking the time to sit down with us and tell us about Lords of the Cosmos!! We hope you continue to have success with this campaign and can’t wait to see what comes from you in the future!!
JL: Sincerely appreciate it- thank you!
